The coffee farmers in othaya Kenya have had tough times in recent years, and the future looked gloomy as youngsters did not want to take over the parents' land plots and continue to grow coffee. Luckily, this has started to change.
When we started working with the farmers in the Othaya co-operative in the Nyeri province in Kenya, the farmers were under great pressure. Yields and earnings were low, and few young people saw a future in coffee. Our objective was to support farmers to raise productivity and quality, and to improve their income.
Today we see that direct trade have improved their finances, and that teaching in field schools and scholarships has improved both knowledge and interest for coffee farming amongst the next generation.
