GOOD COFFEE CAN’T BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED WHEN THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING AND FEWER YOUNG PEOPLE SEE COFFEE FARMING AS THEIR FUTURE. WE WANT TO CHANGE THIS.
Next Generation Coffee is our initiative to encourage the young generation to see a positive future in coffee farming. Through education and direct trade, we improve development opportunities for the next generation of coffee farmers. At the same time, we secure access to high quality coffee in the future.
The coffee farmers in Othaya, Kenya have had tough times in recent years, and the future looked gloomy as youngsters did not want to take over the parents' land plots and continue to grow coffee. Luckily, this has started to change.
Colombia is a well reputed country when it comes to coffee. Still, with an average age of 57 amongst coffee farmers, Colombia share the challenge to get the next generation to see a positive future within coffee.
Coffee farming is a significant contributor to the national economy in Tanzania. However, the sector is mainly dominated by elderly farmers who constitute the highest proportion of coffee producers in the country.
Why NEXT GENERATION COFFEE
The world's coffee farmers are getting older and older. At the same time, fewer young people see a future in coffee. That is why one of the greatest challenges is to get more young women and men to grow coffee.
For us this was a starting point to improve the conditions and the development opportunities for young coffee farmers. We want to give more the opportunity to create a good life for themselves and their families.
Today, two-thirds of the world's coffee farms are small-scale family farms. If more young people do not take over, the coffee production will be affected. A bigger share of the coffee will be farmed on large-scale plantations, which leads to the disappearance of unique qualities and flavours.
So, Next Generation Coffee is an investment in young coffee farmers – and the future of good coffee.
Next Generation Coffee aims to create better earnings for young coffee farmers, and to ensure that there is high quality coffee available for future generations.
Through education and direct trade, the objective is to help young coffee farmers to:
Increase quality and productivity
Manage climate changes
Apply a gender perspective
Become more entrepreneurial
Improve their livelihoods
And for us to:
Be able to offer high quality coffee in the future
a bunch of coffee lovers securing great coffee for tomorrow.
Löfbergs, Peter Larsen Kaffe and Percol are all part of the Löfbergs Coffee Group, A Swedish Family Business founded in 1906. Today we are a bunch of coffee lovers operating in Northern Europe and Canada, sharing the passion for taste, trends and sustainability. And for securing great coffee for tomorrow.
Giving you a tasty cup of coffee is important to us, but so too is making sure the people and environments that grow our coffee are supported, respected and protected. We purchase all our coffee directly from the producing countries and are one of the world’s largest importers of organic and Fairtrade labelled coffee. We also run development projects to support small-scale coffee farmers around the world, such as Next Generation Coffee.
